As part of a series of United Nations meetings held in Geneva, Switzerland, an event called “Promoting Mental Health in the Context of Global Public Health” was held on July 6, 2009. UN officials, public health experts, and preeminent neuroscientists gathered to discuss mental health issues as they relate to the development agenda, the interrelationship of mental health and global public health, cost-effective interventions, and global partnerships in the promotion of mental health.
This event was organized by the Korea Institute of Brain Sciences (KIBS), the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the UN (CoNGO), the International Brain Education Association (IBREA), and the UN-NGO-IRENE Association. At this event Brain Education was introduced by Maryana Winston, MD, FAAP and Ilchi Lee of IBREA as a cost-effective intervention that reduces both physical and mental health risks.
