From Taean's tragedy, I found hope
Sunday, 13 January 2008

Young volunteers from Kook Hak Won at Taean

In December 2007, I went to Taean Peninsula, South Korea, to help clean up one of the world's worst oil spills. I could not experience the natural smell of the ocean because the oil’s odor was being carried by the wind.

Taean has been one of South Korea's most-famous resort beaches. But after this huge disaster, the oil lay on the beach four inches deep. The sad news is that the complete recovery of Taean’s beautiful and pristine ecology will take several decades.

On the rocks of the beach, many volunteers – citizen from all walks of life, military personnel, and Kook Hak Won (Traditional Korean Cultural Institute) members – all in white prevention dress, were very diligently cleaning the stones over and over again. I joined and cleaned with them, glad and grateful that I was there to help, with this gesture of the Earth’s healing.

Looking at the ocean and beach, many of us gave deep sighs. But soon these sighs changed to smiles in order for us to encourage each other. Based on the strong feelings that we experienced there and then, we all seemed to make a silent, collective promise to save and protect our Earth.

I believe this great tragedy of the oil spill eventually will be seen as a precious incident of awakening all of us to the principle that Heaven, Earth and Human are truly all one.

If all people can feel that they are indeed one, and if we can create the future that people and the Earth protect each other and coexist, then now is not a time of deep despair, but a time of genuine hope for us.

There is still a need for people to help with the cleaning on the Taean beaches. If you live in South Korea, I recommend that you make a visit to Taean, along with your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers.

There lies a precious enlightenment.

A meditation tour to my elementary school

A meditation tour to my elementary school

Recently, I visited the elementary school, Sung Nam Elementary School, in rural South Korea, from which I graduated 45 years ago. The playground, in which I used to run and get out of breath, now looked to me like a very small garden.

Standing before the old school building and playground, I fell into a deep meditation for a long while. In my eyes, many vivid pictures from the past 45 years of my life, starting with my days in this school, went through my mind.

In the middle of this quiet and peaceful state of mind, my life’s journey flowed on like a movie. In it, a small boy who played very joyfully in this playground became an older gentleman with gray hair – who now communicates an Earth Human culture by making worldwide tours and meeting many diverse people.

I also imagined the time remaining for me to live on this precious Earth. The thought came naturally to my mind that I should devote my life to sharing and serving humanity. This end is now much more important and meaningful to me than anything else I could be doing.

The principal of this school is an esteemed educator with a strong educational philosophy. However, he confided that his school, located in a rural area losing population, might be on the verge of closing – if only two more students transfer to other schools.

Image

I felt very sad thinking that this school – from which my father graduated in its 10th term and later taught, and I graduated in its 35th term with the many memories of my childhood – might very soon simply disappear. I grabbed the principal’s hands and declared my heart’s intention to help revive “our” school so that it survives and even thrives. I promised that I would facilitate the teachers, parents, students, and him to become “one mind” in making a happy and creative school. I would contribute my expertise in Brain Education to be practiced in this school, so that children would want to attend it, even coming from distant places.

South Korea’s University of Brain Education, of which I am the president, and Sung Nam Elementary School set up a collaborative relationship, announced in the school’s hall, December 5, 2007, the same day on which the Charter of National Education is celebrated in South Korea. The school graciously declared this date henceforth be called “Ilchi Lee Day.” Because of the connection to my childhood, I was happier this day than the times when 10 American cities honored me by declaring various dates as “Ilchi Lee Day.”

I feel really joyful in imagining my young juniors in Sung Nam Elementary School growing up with a sensitive, artistic and empowered personality, because of their experience with Brain Education methods – such as HSP (Health, Smile, Peace) 12 Steps, a program for physical and mental strengthening.

With all my heart, I would like to recommend that people who graduated elementary school two or three decades ago, make a visit to their elementary schools. Then they too may have a meaningful opportunity to reflect on their lives and to make a new plan for living their lives and contributing to the betterment of other people. If the school needs help, it can be an even more meaningful visit.

A meditation tour to your elementary school... you can meet yourself there.

My father and his dream for the late bloomer
Wednesday, 09 January 2008

Two years ago I created the Jangsaeng (Longevity) Walking method to heal my own back, which I had injured in falling off a horse in the Arizona desert. The book based on this walking method was published in May 2007, and has sold more than 130,000 copies, making it a bestseller in South Korea.

My father's dream for the late bloomer

Throughout 2007, I have shared Jangsaeng Walking with tens of thousands of people, giving 100 lectures in five countries. I invited my father to this event, hoping to honor him in person. But his health condition prevented him from coming. Soon to be 90, he hurt his back a few years ago while protecting his wife from falling down. Since then, because of advanced age and a back not yet fully recovered, he rarely leaves his home.

I was born near the start of the Korean War, in Cheonan, South Korea. I was the eldest son in a family with a strong paternal lineage of teachers. My father named me Seung Heun, to connect me to core life principles. [Later in my life, I took the name Ilchi, to express my mission in life as one who points the way.]

My parents had very high expectations for me, but during my youth I failed to satisfy them. I felt no interest in school life, and did not concentrate on my studies. Had it been today, I would have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, a condition of delayed learning capacity.

In school, my hands could not follow my thoughts, which occurred very fast. My teachers’ explanations did not interest me. I could not take notes, or concentrate on what they said. Instead, I was lost in my own thoughts all the time. Because of my highly introspective personality, I had no friends. My only real friend was my father.

My father never scolded when I showed him my consistently poor grades. As a life-long career schoolteacher, he was no doubt perplexed by my poor performance. Instead, he always encouraged me, saying, “Great talents mature late.” The reason why I did not lose courage, despite my lackluster school life, was because of his positive messages, which became deeply rooted inside of me.

When I was in high school, out of curiosity I began to smoke cigarettes. Soon, my father found this out. I expected that he would furiously berate me, but he did not say a word. Instead, the next day he bought him a dozen of packs of cigarettes. While he himself smoked a cheap brand, he advised me to smoke good-quality cigarettes if I really wanted to smoke. I made up my mind then not to smoke again in my whole life. He had again educated me to have good thoughts and form good habits.

After graduating from high school, I was not interested in attending a university. Without a clear goal, I spent my time teaching the children in his town what I had studied – Taekwondo and Aikido martial arts.

One day, my father suddenly retired from his school position. I believe that he might have felt doubt in encouraging me as a late bloomer. He was in effect saying that a person who failed to properly teach his own son lacked the credibility to teach students.

My father gave me half of his retirement grant, telling me to play the role of the eldest son by using the money to invest in a business for me and support my younger brothers. So, I opened my own Taekwondo studio in the daytime, and went to a university in the evening. I began to take care of my brothers and behave as the head of the family.

I deeply feel that it was the power of belief, unconditional love and other positive messages that my father planted in my young brain that enabled me to become ambitious and confident as I have lived my life since then. These attitudes proved invaluable in my career and life.

Because of the challenging experience of my own schooling, I developed the concept of the Brain Operating System, and realized the principle, “Good news makes a good brain.” Thanks to the model of Jangsaeng (longevity) that my father showed me, I have devised a way of living a Jangsaeng life to realize one’s dream, while being healthy and happy. I offer my deepest gratitude to my father again and again.

We are welcoming the dawn of 2008 with a fresh mind.
This year I hope that together we can create health, happiness and peace.
The most important thing is how we understand and utilize our brains.
Those who utilize their brains well can create better lives for themselves, their families and the community.

The hope of the world is in your brain. The power to create health, happiness and peace lies in your brain.
If we utilize our brains so that we can live our lives with consideration of our neighbors and communities, rather than only for personal benefit, we can create a future in which we can all grow to become the best versions of ourselves.
If we understand the brain and how to use it, the dreams of humankind will be realized.
We can create a beautiful and happy world through our brains.

To do that, we need to answer these two questions:
"What meaning does my brain have for my life?"
"What does it mean to know my brain?"

I created Brain Wave Vibration Training and Jangsaeng Walking to help you use your brain well. I hope you find them to be helpful in the creation of your ideal life.
I hope that all humankind finds health and happiness in 2008.
I hope that a new world will be born.

Article: Are You the Boss of Your Brain?
Thursday, 25 October 2007

Do you ever wish that your brain had come equipped with a user’s manual? If so, take a time to read this article. In it, I introduce the concept of the Brain Operating System (BOS) User’s Manual, which can help you gain a sense of personal mastery over your brain. - Ilchi Lee

My Own Brain

When we buy a technological product, it usually comes with a user's manual. Computers, mobile phones, and electronic gadgets, which have become necessities for modern people, all include user manuals. In the case of automobiles, a manual is not enough; we can use a car only if we pass the qualifying exam and get a "driver's license."

Even the steam automobile first introduced to humanity in the 1700s had a user manual. Why then is there no user's manual for the brain, the most important of tools for human beings? I have wrestled with this question since an early age. Had I been a student who studied well and adapted well to life at school during my childhood, I wouldn't have entertained such questions. But the "brain" was always a riddle for me during my school years, when an attention disorder made it impossible for me to even take notes.

Now I am nearing the age of 60. Over the course of my lifetime, neuroscience has developed more rapidly than during any other time in human history. Thanks to that rapid development, a few years ago I was able to view direct images of my brain with the assistance of a doctor in LA. According to him, my brain is much better at imagining and creating than it is at recalling things through conventional learning. Had I heard this during my childhood, I would have escaped very quickly from the stress caused by a learning maladjustment, and I would have made better use of my brain much earlier in life.

Through the process of observing my own brain, I have come to realize that my brain likes having great dreams for humanity and likes to find ways to realize those dreams. I have developed a new educational paradigm called "Brain Education" by learning as much as I can about the human brain through many years of research and personal observation.

Real Education

I have concluded that the education most needed by human beings is not English or mathematics, but rather the understanding and effective use of the brain. If we had purchased our brains with money, they would have come with user's manuals. We've had our brains since the time we were born, however, so they don't include a manual. We could ask our parents for a brain user manual, but they wouldn't be able to give us one since they don't have one either. Without the most important form of education in life, most people cannot create healthy, happy, and peaceful lives.

Without proper brain education from a young age, people fail even to perceive their brains as their own. Often people are unable to control the negative thoughts and emotions that arise in their brains, and people ruin their own lives as a result of being contaminated by bad information from the outside.

BOS Ownership

If we are stressed out by our family lives or social lives, or are hurt in our personal relationships, we just go on as if nothing has happened to us. If someone had taken a sharp object and scratched up the paint job on your new car, you would have been as angry and upset as if someone had done this to your leg. We are unaware of injuries to our brains, however, and so do nothing about them. Since we don't perceive our brains as belonging to us, we have no affection for them and do not manage them well. Our lives can be thrown into irreversible crises because we don't deal properly with such wounds.

Let's say you have a cell phone. Whose cell phone is it? Whose watch is now wrapped around your wrist? If you drove your car to where you are now, whose car is it? You will say, "It's mine." What about your brain, then? Whose is it?
The most basic perception of Brain Education is this: "My brain is my own." When we develop a sense of ownership that says, "My brain is my own," we can use our brains well to promote our own health, happiness, and peace.

BOS User's Manual

Just as computers have an operating system (OS), and our brains need an OS, too. The BOS Brain User's Manual helps people reshape their brains. It brings HSP (health, smiles, and peace) to people's lives and helps improve quality of life.

There are three principles involved in BOS operation. The first principle is "You achieve what you choose"; the second principle is "Good news creates good brains"; and the third principle is "Stay awake and pay attention." If you make use of these three principles, then you will be able to control and use your brain as you desire.

The process of becoming the master of your brain involves five steps. We call these the BEST 5. BEST is an acronym for Brain Education Training System, which is comprised of the steps of Brain Sensitizing, Brain Versatilizing, Brain Refreshing, Brain Integrating, and Brain Mastery. A variety of educational programs corresponding to BEST 5 have been developed and many people around the world are already being educated under this system.

The BOS Brain User's Manual and BEST have now spread to 10 countries worldwide, including the United States and Japan, where many people are experiencing the benefits of becoming the masters of their brains.

In early 2008, a book detailing the BOS Brain User's Manual will be published. You can access publication-related news at www.Ilchi.com.

Poem: Welcome to Ilchi.com
Thursday, 18 October 2007

Do you know
that you are the Earth,
that you are Heaven?

You represent humanity.
Your soul knows this.
Your brain also knows.
And your body knows
that your body and mind are one with the Earth.

Your brain knows
why you have come to this Earth,
what the Earth wants from you.
Your brain knows.

Everyone has a brain.
But those who know the true significance of the brain
and those who know their own true worth
are few and far between.

That you have a great and sacred soul
That the future of humanity depends on you
That the future of the Earth depends on you—
These are truly matters of incomparable significance.
Ilchi.com was created to support you
in examining and solving these pressing issues.

You are welcome here at Ilchi.com.
That we have met to create a beautiful world
is truly precious and beautiful indeed.

The Earth needs us now.
Humanity has received much grace and love from the Earth.
Now it is our turn to repay that grace.
For the completion of all our souls and for a beautiful Earth
I wish to be with you forever.

I invite you to join me in awakening the greatness of humanity
and in creating a beautiful Earth.
I await your ideas with eager anticipation.

Video: DahnMu-Dancing with Energy
Friday, 12 October 2007

Please take this energy dance video as my gift to you. This dance was first performed on October 1, 2007, for a group of fifty Japanese workshop participants in my Unki School, an educational program in which people can learn all about circulation of energy. - Ilchi Lee

It represents the art of Dahn Mu, a free-form dance following the natural energetic flow.

Through this practice, you can experience true freedom of body and mind while opening your body to healing energy. I wanted to share this with you because I feel it expresses the energetic connection shared by all humanity. By opening our hearts and our minds to each other, we open ourselves to this energy. As you watch this video, I hope you can feel the love I have for you and all humanity.

Please leave your comment after watching the video clip.
