Einstein’s Riddle Print E-mail

Are you among the world’s smartest two percent?

The below riddle was supposedly written in the late 1800s by Albert Einstein, and it is claimed that 98 percent of the population cannot solve it.

While it’s hard to find documentation supporting either of these claims, it’s still a fun little puzzle.

Tip: Grab a paper and pencil. This will be difficult to work out in your head.

Here are the facts:

In a street there are five houses, painted five different colors.
In each house lives a person of a different nationality.
These five homeowners each drink a different kind of beverage, smoke a different brand of cigar and keep a different pet.

The riddle is: Who owns the fish?

The hints:
1.The Brit lives in a red house.

2.The Swede keeps dogs as pets.

3.The Dane drinks tea.

4.The green house is next to, and on the left of the White house.

5.The owner of the green house drinks coffee.

6.The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.

7.The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.

8.The man living in the center house drinks milk.

9.The Norwegian lives in the first house.

10.The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.

11.The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
12.The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.

13.The German smokes Prince.

14.The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.

15.The man who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water.

This was fun to try to figure out but after half an hour I gave up. How do you figure it out? It's a great Brain Teaser. I'm smart but couldn't figure it out.

smilies/grin.gif I got it! I love logic puzzles and am a visual person. I drew 5 houses and numbered them one to five. Next I used a pen to write in the information that I knew was associated with which house and blank lines for information that I didn't have confirmed. Then I made a list of all the catagoried items that are mentioned in the riddle and hints (ie, Pets, House Color, Cigars, etc.). After that I used a pencil to fill in the blank spaces in my chart and used process of ellimination to fill in the blanks. You have to take a risk in deciding where some of the secondary information goes but stick with it! It is do-able!

How do the smileys work? With all that information I decided like Into the Ocean to work it out graphically. But when there were blanks in the boxes I figured this must be intuited rather than analyzed. I had it wrong but I see my pattern (I figured the man who keeps cats would also have a fish). It seems that if I'm presented with alot information I am impatient to find an answer.

I amazed myself and figured it out in about ten minutes! Usually, I become impatient and frustrated with a complicated puzzle. I saw it was a process of elimination, and some guesswork. While I worked at it, I sat in my robe, in a chilly room, finishing my first cup of coffee. My husband saw it on my laptop screen; now he's sitting and trying to figure it out! It's a great feeling to know I can challenge my brain and have the patience to find a solution. smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif

That was fun! A wonderful lunch time de-stresser. I created several charts and through deductive reasoning everything seemed to fall into place. Thanks for refreshing my brain! smilies/cheesy.gif

I made it, and most of all it was alot of fun to do it! I am not so sure about the 2%, but Einstein was also spiritual and maybe he knew the power of becoming what you believe you are (where mind goes energy follows)... smilies/smiley.gif

That was fun smilies/cheesy.gif
I got stuck twice, and each time I found the one tiny move that opened up a sequence of dependent matches. I'd forgotten how much I like this sort of thing!
