Ilchi Lee donated $6,000 to a charity that cares for children with tuberculosis in North Korea, announced November 5, 2007. As he expressed it, "I felt very sad hearing that these innocent kids were dying of tuberculosis. It did not feel like this is a matter affecting other people; it felt like it was my personal situation." He suffered with tuberculosis in his 20s, thanks to proper medical treatment.

According to Ilchi Lee, "If you have had tuberculosis, you know how painful it can be. You suffer even more when your nutritional condition is poor. When the South Korean economy was not good, many people did not eat well." He found out that he had tuberculosis three months starting his mandatory military service. After being treated at a military hospital for half a year, he was discharged because of his state of health. He has never forgotten his fellow suffering soldiers who passed away because of tuberculosis.
Ilchi Lee has helped the North Korean people before. In 1998, he organized an event called the International Fasting Day for North Korea, collecting donations totaling $100,000, which supported the fertilizer project for North Korea. In 2000, he hosted the Korean Big Festival, where 5,000 people gave money, which was donated to the Korean Red Cross for use in North Korean. In urging South Koreans to help North Korean kids with tuberculosis, he asserted, "Anticipating the day that Korea, the last divided country on Earth, will be unified, there is no better preparation than to recover the health and give smiles to children.
