To a packed house of 120 people, dominated by senior citizens, Ilchi Lee spoke on "Brain and Successful Aging" at the Sedona Public Library, February 17, 2008, 2:00-4:00 PM.

As president of the University of Brain Education (in South Korea) and a 15-year resident of Sedona, he identified the three secrets we have to choose to age well when over 50: inspiring music, regular action, and positive message.

His lecture marked the worldwide debut of his and Jessie Jones’s new book In Full Bloom – A Guide to Brain Education for Successful Aging (Best Life Media; available at Amazon.com), on how to engage the brain in staying young and maximizing a healthy body, happy mind, and peaceful spirit. With the book first shipped to Sedona for this event, Sedona residents are the vanguard readers of how to age gracefully.

In the greeting by Pud Colquitt, Mayor of the City of Sedona, she pointed out the importance of meeting the needs of both children and elders. She emphasized that the Sedona government, businesses, and elders themselves must find ways to improve and maintain health and well-being. She acknowledged the value of occasions such as Lee sharing practical information on aging well with his “neighbors.”

Lee made a case for us to get to know our brains better, especially at an advanced age, when we really need the brain’s effective contribution to physical health, emotional happiness, and peace of mind. We need to control our emotions to produce less negative and more positive hormones in the brain, which accounts for how well our bodies and minds age. This boils down to making the right choices to realize those benefits to lengthen our health span to reach our life span.

To experience the uplifting power of inspirational music, Lee asked the audience to listen with eyes closed to the instrumental musical piece “Sometimes When It Rains,” from the Secret Garden duo’s Earthsongs CD. As a prime example of action, accompanied by pulsating music, he led the audience through Brain Wave Vibrations (BWV), a simple but powerful exercise for keeping the brain open, flexible and growing. He showed a video in which people from three countries described the dramatic results received from BWV.

Positive messages are the information we focus on when we think and act, especially the notions of taking responsibility, loving one’s brain, and staying hopeful. With a strong brain and soul, we can stay young and lessen the inevitable decline of the physical body.

Lee announced that he has donated 300 copies of his In Full Bloom to the senior community centers of Sedona and the Verde Valley, so that their members can easily access this manual for using the brain to resist physical and mental problems. He presented five copies of the book to the Sedona Public Library collection in order to share successful aging principles and practices with Sedona’s many age-conscious readers.

For people who want structured training in brain-related exercises, Lee announced the first Brain Education Retreat for Successful Aging, March 16-19 (4 days, 3 nights), at the Sedona Ilchi Meditation Center, in the heart of Coconino National Forest. In this residential program on the160-acre retreat center, the program will cover brain wave vibration, energy training, cognitive exercise, joint exercise, and flexibility, balance and strength training.

To help the people in the audience wondering how well theirs brains are aging, Lee had a gift for them: the Brain Condition Test, a list of 26 quality-of-life questions on health, happiness and peace. When the instrument is completed, they can receive a free consultation on their “HSP (health, smile/happiness, peace) Quotient,” at the Dahn Yoga Center, 430 Jordan Road, Uptown Sedona, plus a three-yoga-class complimentary pass.

After Lee’s lecture, a long line formed of people wanting his signature on the senior author’s In Full Bloom book.

I see this program as a wave of the future. So many people are so concerned about aging in a healthy way and keeping their minds intact. The best book I have seen yet for general public education. I plan on ordering at least 5 to give away.
