Korea Institute of Brain Science Hosts a Brain Education Seminar Print E-mail

Jessie Jones, Ph.D., a professor of gerokinesiology and health science at the Center for Successful Aging at California State University-Fullerton, spoke at the seminar Brain Education and Health in the Era of the 100-year Life Span on April 1, 2008.

Held at the Korea Economic Newspaper building in Seoul, South Korea, the seminar was sponsored by the Korea Institute of Brain Science and the Korea Economic Daily newspaper. It focused on healthy and successful aging for longevity.

Two hundred people from all walks of life attended this event, including Choong Chang, the president of Dan Guk University. Choong Chang is notable because he embodies the Brain Education for Successful Aging lifestyle. He is living an energetic life studying foreign languages, playing the pipe organ, and exercising despite his age of 77.

Dr. Jones was invited by Ilchi Lee, the co-author of their recent book, In Full Bloom: A Brain Education Guide for Successful Aging. In her lecture, Dr. Jones gave the message, “In the coming 100-year life span era, if you want to live a young and healthy life and achieve what you want, it is very important to educate your brain throughout your life.”

She told the audience, "You can recreate your life only when your brain is healthy. Even as you get older, if you practice well, your brain will respond to any task you give it.”

“Inactive people, on the other hand, have an unresponsive brain. For successful aging, we should do exercises we like, for at least an hour a day, to maintain young motor nerves and to reduce the possibility of disease.”

“In addition to exercising, the power of positive thinking strengthens the brain’s functionality and healing ability. To activate this power you need three things – an owner’s mentality towards your brain, contribution to others, and compassion and acceptance for yourself and others,” she added. Meditating, smiling, and greeting and hugging each other often are actions you can take to create these characteristics.

The second speaker at the seminar was Dr. Il Geun Lee, Director of the Brain Health Research Institute in South Korea. Dr. Lee (no relation to Ilchi Lee) spoke about the symptoms and prevention of brain illness.

The final speaker was Ilchi Lee, who talked about the potential of Brain Education in the modern age for life management. Lee said living a healthy and happy life until the very end, with purpose and dreams, is as important as living a long life.

He explained that a healthy aging process follows the principles of nature. Knowing these principles and having a method to practice them for the rest of your life is how you age well. By doing this kind of practice, your brain will be activated no matter how old you are. Brain Education System Training (BEST) is this kind of principle and practice.

Immediately following the seminar, an inauguration ceremony for the International Society of Longevity was held. This society was formed to play a large role in researching the Brain Education for Successful Aging program. Both the seminar and the new society are the beginning of deeper and more widespread understanding of the aging brain and Brain Education’s effects on it.
