Many cultures have similar ideals which recognize the necessity of collective well-being for social harmony and individual happiness. In Korean culture, this humanitarian ideal is known as “Hong Ik” which means to “advance the welfare of all humanity.” Ilchi Lee realized that application of the Hong Ik principle to health and wellness could inspire and help modern humans; for the sake of the Earth’s future we could learn to transcend our individual limitations. The Hong Ik philosophy guides Ilchi Lee’s life and work and encompasses his personal understanding of the brain.
Chun Bu Kyung, which can be translated as “the Sacred Code of Heaven,” is essentially a numerical representation of the laws of the cosmos. It is an ancient Taoist text made of 81 characters. One of the key concepts of the Chun Bu Kyung is the triad of heaven, earth, and human. Its essential concept is a universe of oneness: good and evil, life and death, heaven and earth are not defined as opposites, but as parts of the same cosmic harmony. The text places human beings between heaven and earth. If humans could realize their innate divine potential, they would become one with the essence of the universe, embodying creativity, peace, and love. In doing so, we reach the highest level of awareness and consciously return to the Source of all life. This process of awakening and regeneration is delineated in the characters of the Chun Bu Kyung.
Ancient principles of Jang Saeng, or longevity with vitality, offer ways to obtain and maintain vibrant health. In the ancient Sun Do traditions of the Korean people, virtuous living was not encouraged by the promise of a reward in an afterlife or other incarnation. Instead, virtuous living was thought to offer the reward of a better, healthier, and longer life right now. Virtuous living in this ancient tradition meant enjoying a productive lifestyle while wisely living in harmony with nature. There is an inexorable link between nurturing the beauty of the earth and the beauty within the human being. The ideal was to live a healthy life in a beautiful place and in harmony with nature for as long as possible. In keeping with these principles, Ilchi Lee has developed holistic methods such as Jang Saeng Walking and other Brain Education techniques to address the quality of life imbalance often characteristic of a modern lifestyle in order to help people live better, longer. Jang Saeng Walking Walking is a basic exercise proven to be beneficial for your health. Using the following principles with the repetitive motion of walking will greatly enhance its benefits by improving your body’s energy circulation:
◆◆Tilt the lower part of your pelvis forward. ◆◆ Breathe with your lower abdomen. ◆◆ Let your heel tap the ground gently as you step forward, with a straight leg. ◆◆ Feel your weight transfer fully to the balls and toes of your foot. ◆◆ Keep your feet parallel, stepping on either side of an imaginary line. ◆◆ Angle your body one degree forward. ◆◆ Swing your arms freely. ◆◆ Smile!
